Campground Reservations with Total Escape

Image
Campground Reservations w/ Reserve America are back! just in time for summer No hurry, no worries, as you coast down the forested route to your premiere camping destination. A shady campground near an alpine lake or fishing creek is a favorite destination for many in California. Summer time is here and it seems everyone is on vacation; but alas, you have camping reservations at this perfect spot - a camp site held specifically for you. Over the past two decades Total Escape has seen numerous affiliate programs disappear, hundreds of independent lodges go out of business and recreation outfitters close shop. About 5 years ago ReserveAmerica , the nationwide campground reservation system, was acquired by Active.com. Soon after most of our campground links were null and void, so DanaMite updated them to something more relevant. Well it has taken a several years but we finally got all the new camping reservation links back up, so you can now reserve a campground through Tot

Waterproof Maps

Image
WATERPROOF TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS Paper maps are fading fast. Literally, disappearing into landfills, campfires or into the archives of map collectors. Digital maps have totally taken over our lives and you'll be hard pressed to find a decent printed local area hiking map when traveling small towns inside California . Keep in mind that many of the middle-of-nowhere, back road destinations we feature on Total Escape do not receive adequate cell phone service, much less a wireless, high speed, digital network. So plan accordingly. Old timers, frequent travelers and experienced outdoor folks still want the hard copy - a real map! Waterproof and tear resistant plastic maps are now common. Tom Harrison was one if the first to offer quality plastic hiking maps. All the  NatGeo map titles are 2-sided, full color and plastic. USDA has slowly been transitioning their National Forests maps to plastic maps over the past few years. California Wilderness area maps are only about half

NEW SEARCH California road trip planner Like cooking and gardening, travel and trip planning is an art form unto itself. Local vacations should be worry free and easy, close to home, with plenty of time for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Spend some time dreaming, browsing online and planning (well in advance). Laying down a basic itinerary ahead of time will help so you can see more sights - and stress less. maps.google.com is an invaluable tool for planning local road trips, getting an overview, plus an idea of travel time, mileage and distance. Total Escape is now 17 years old and founder DanaMite is celebrating this milestone by cleaning house, redesigning some areas and moving servers. So, this was perfect time to redo the SEARCH tool , aka search box, search Total Escape featured at the top of every page. Please take in mind that there are two different sites that make up Total Escape (not including the blogspot blog, flickr photos or any social media pages).

Lake Powell Boat Rentals

Image
Boating Powell: The Couples Choice No need for a big houseboat? Try a power boat rental instead. Cheryl and Jay rented a 21 foot power boat. This was MUCH less expensive than a houseboat rental, and a much faster way to get around the lake. It allowed them to motor deep into some of the slot canyons & find private coves for overnight stays. Obviously, they gave up a lot of the luxury of the house boats, but this power boat had a cabin that slept 2 comfortably, and it was nearly ideal for their needs. Jay brought his inflatable kayak, which worked great to get deeper into the narrowing canyons. From there, they could continued on foot, and had to wade or swim through some passages. It was a great experience! Lake Powell is located in the desert near the Grand Canyon. In the Summer shaded coves may produce relief from 100 degree days. The water temp ranged from about 80 to 86 degrees. Spring & Fall are very comfortable. Powerboat rentals start at $350 per day and

Fly Fishing Northern California

Image
Fly fishing California is best in the Northern half of the state. With the minimal rains and minimal lakes inside Southern Cal, you best be driving north to find your perfect fishing hole -  way north. All areas around Mount Shasta & Mount Lassen are excellent for fishing. Feather River, Hat Creek, Trinity River , Klamath River , Northern Gold Country's Yuba River near Downieville & even the Sacramento River are all excellent spots for casting your line. Most of the Eastern Sierra is decent for fly fishing too. Rock Creek near Tom's Place ; behind Mammoth Lakes is Minaret Creek & Boundary Creek; Hot Creek is across the highway from Mammoth. Golden aspens are always awesome in autumn near June Lake with Rush Creek ; Green Creek is near Bridgeport CA & the Walker River is just north of that. You can find professional fly fishing guides to help you get started. Online fishing reports are updated by anglers, who also run extensive web sites on the spo
