Food Movies: Food Matters

Getting educated on GMO takes significant time. Reading every article you can on the genetically engineered food topic, searching for the most recent scientific studies and latest news, examining who the corporations behind this biotechnology are and how many billions they are spending to defeat this consumer led proposition 37 in California. Food documentary films have led the way in educating the masses - on what we are eating and how it is directly affecting our health. Food Matters was released in 2009.

With nutritionally-depleted foods, chemical additives and our tendency to rely upon pharmaceutical drugs to treat what's wrong with our malnourished bodies, it's no wonder that modern society is getting sicker. Food Matters sets about uncovering the trillion dollar worldwide 'sickness industry' and gives people some scientifically verifiable solutions for overcoming illness naturally.

Food Movies: The Future of Food

This food documentary was one of the first to accurately illustrate the process of gene insertion on the DNA level. The Future of Food offers an in-depth exploration of several important developments in agriculture today including the diminishment of biodiversity, patenting of life, loss of family farms, consolidation of seed companies and the globalization of our food system. Using genetically engineered crops as a primary cause and result of these new developments, the film delves into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled the worlds grocery stores for the past decade.

Food Movies: The World According to Monsanto

This documentary released in 2008, just in the nick of time for Americans to wake up to their declining health, and take serious action against the corporate factors that control their lives. California vote YES on Prop 37 to label genetically engineered foods.

Thanks to these intimate links between Monsanto and government agencies, the US adopted GE foods and crops without proper testing, without consumer labeling and in spite of serious questions hanging over their safety. Not coincidentally, Monsanto supplies 90 percent of the GE seeds used by the US market. Monsanto's long arm stretched so far that, in the early nineties, the US Food and Drugs Agency even ignored warnings of their own scientists, who were cautioning that GE crops could cause negative health effects. Other tactics the company uses to stifle concerns about their products include misleading advertising, bribery and concealing scientific evidence.

    Food Movies: Genetic Roulette

    NEW FOOD DOCUMENTARY:
Based on the 2007 book Genetic Roulette, by Jeffrey Smith. geneticroulettemovie.com

    Movie trailer -
Experts expose the serious threats and how corporations like Monsanto hide the evidence. Never-before-seen evidence points to genetically engineered foods as a major contributor to rising disease rates in the US population, especially among children. Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn. Monsanto's strong arm tactics, the FDA's fraudulent policies, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare. This sometimes shocking film may change your diet, protect you and your family, and accelerate the consumer tipping point against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) already underway. Don't miss this film!

    Food Movies: Food, Inc

With all the talk of food in the news, Total Escape would like to share some of our favorite food documentaries. In the coming days DanaMite will post different movies relating to food, water, health, diet, agriculture, industrialized farming and organic gardening.

Lifting the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment.

Mammoth Mountain just announced opening day for skiing in early November 2012. Temps are dropping each night and autumn colors are the next big show. Eastern Sierra aspen groves can be seen as far south as Whitney Portal near Lone Pine, and as far north as well, Tahoe of course. Great camping and fishing near June Lake, Bridgeport, and Hope Valley.

Fall is also the season for viewing meteor showers for those campers who love to stargaze.

    Map Availability

Maps can save your life. Maps can get you un-lost and can show you the way. Maps are your escape route outta the city.

In a digital world where we are so connected w/ internet, smartphones and GoogleMaps, it is amazing that folks can find there way to real back roads of California. Don't be shocked when your digital signal drops at the wilderness edge and you are finally "away".

Most online map sources are NOT accurate beyond the city limits, much less the forest boundary. Seriously folks, THEY don't want you out there. There is no place in the Wilderness to spend any money. Many have not properly logged the back roads yet, or perhaps they just won't make it available to the general public. You'll be lucky if they get the road number correct.

    BACK ORDERED / BACKORDER?
OUT OF PRINT, OUT OF STOCK

Availability of good maps is an ongoing issue. It's a unique factor in the map selling business. Although Total Escape carries a variety of California maps from numerous map vendors, there is still a slight chance we cannot get the exact map you want, by the time you need it. Best advice is to order maps as early as possible before your departure date. We offer USPS Priority Mail shipping if you need it within a week.

Most hiking maps are now printed in waterproof, tear -resistant plastic, some on recyclable polypropylene (PP) plastic. Maps go outta print and may never get republished. Maps go outta print and can come back within months, or the next version may be years to come. Sometimes there are decades between map editions, especially ones that are government produced. The cartographers are reworking that one. There are some property boundary issues. We have no expected due date, nor print date.

Maps fall into many categories (like by region) but we are locally focused on the West Coast. Total Escape concentrates on outdoors in California and Baja California, so this list below will stick to map publishers and availability.

    government issued maps:
    USDA Wilderness
    National Forest Service
BLM - Bureau of Land Management

    private map publishers:
    Benchmark
    Imus Geographics
    National Geographic
    Tom Harrison
    Wilderness Press

Several items that have consistent patterns (over 16 year period) on AVAILABLITY -
    • Ever popular Baja Almanac can go years without printing, updates and new editions.
    • The spiral bound, topographic atlases created by the USDA go outta stock often.
    • Older USDA recreation or wilderness maps may run out, never to come back in stock.
    • USDA Wilderness maps go out of stock often and can be out for months or years.

    Fukushima California

Summer of 2012 and California has yet to slide off into the ocean, but the Pacific Ring of Fire is extremely active with earthquakes, and so are the volcanoes in the world. With wild stories of bizarre weather and climate change, anything is possible for the remainder of the year. The recession seems to be turning into a depression, the BP oil spill has polluted the Gulf of Mexico, and slowed down the Gulf Steam (North Atlantic Drift, or conveyor belt). This season we realize the triple nuclear meltdown in Japan is ongoing, perpetually poisoning the entire Pacific Ocean and our global atmosphere with unhealthy amounts of cancerous radiation.

    Marketing a Hotel

As independent innkeepers, marketing hotel property online and off line is now equally important. Gone are the days when you could run a small advertisement in the local newspaper and hope travelers see it. Now a full menu of advertising campaigns is necessary to even survive. A professional looking web site about your lodge with great photos, a map and current room rates, is a must in todays competitive market.

    hotel advertisement

ON LINE - First you need to understand your cyber market, the folks that are surfing the web looking for a place to stay next weekend. Most are on the web daily, many for well over a decade and they expect web site to work properly. Amazing looking photographs to illustrate just how unique your property is just the start. They expect all links, emails, forms or PDF downloads to work correctly, all seasonal pages to be updated a few times per year, and they expect to be able to gather recreation and tourist information on your local California region. So needless to say - your web site best be up to date.

Online marketing is another step, after your web site is updated and ready to get some attention. Title tags, different on every single page is the best way to establish organic search results. When you want to get more exposure, you could contact local travel-related businesses and ask to trade links. They can provide your lodge with a free listing and a link, and you find a spot on your web site for their service. Many create 'links' or resource pages on their web site, just for this purpose.

Next step is to reach out to busy web sites that have serious, established web traffic.

    hotel reviews

Reviews 300x250 Trip Advisor is a very popular web site that has real customer reviews for restaurants as well as all hotels and lodging. They even list private Vacation Homes and a few RV Resorts and Campgrounds too. Make sure you business is properly featured with correct accommodations and amenities. As an innkeeper you should respond to negative reviews in a tactful manner, as potential customers will be reading to see how flexible and courteous you are.

The State of California Tourism site allows for content submissions and business listings, but they could cost you a pretty penny. Lodging association web sites are highly overrated and minimal tourists actually use those sites. Hotel and popular travel sites like TripAdvisor, Travelocity, Expedia, HotWire can be good places to list your property, but be warned of commission structure and fees.

Learn to cater to your regional market, as well as the world traveler. Find local travel sites, county recreation sites, Chamber of Commerce web sites. Get listed on their web site by providing them with a link first, and them contacting them directly.

    hospitality marketing

Total Escape has been 'on the web' promoting the outdoors and back road destinations in California for over 15 years, and we have the local content and the repeat traffic to keep on top of the game. Our California Lodging is the second most visited page on the site, and your inn might already be listed. We offer annual ads for California hotels, budget motels, hostels, mountain lodges, cabin rentals and vacation homes, all at dirt cheap rates!
